Mixing materials and finishes to create a European feel helped create this comfortable family room. In this traditional foursquare home the owners were up for ingeniously using their existing space and opening up the second floor for a mix of bedrooms and gathering space. To do this a wall was removed between the stairs and one bedroom. Now light is accessible from 3 sides of the home, making the whole space brighter.
The cabinets are cherry and are made with larger scale components to make them feel old fashioned; the cherry will darken over time. The floors are lighter to provide a warm mix in the woods. The custom wrought iron handrail and blackened iron of the firebox provide the industrial mix with the high tech lighting. The more unique detail in this room is the sliding rail the television is mounted on so the owners can slide it out of the way.
