One of the most important pieces of this remodel for the clients was for it to be as environmentally friendly as possible. The addition of this Edina country club project only encroached an additional ten feet onto the back yard but gave the family so much more living space in return. This remodel included the kitchen, dinette area, mudroom and powder room on the main floor, a playroom on the lower level, an additional bath and bedroom on the upper floor. Material and design selections had to meet green thresholds before being included.
Prior to the start of construction multiple design solutions were reviewed until all could agree that the design goals were being met in the scheme that had the smallest footprint possible. As soon as this condition was met, materials were selected first by reusing those pieces already existing in the home that could be used. Plumbing and cabinetry from an existing bathroom was freshened up and reused in the new powder room. In the lower level, which was reorganized to double the size of the playroom, existing wall paneling was removed, cut in half and used as wainscot throughout the larger play area. Secondly lights, such as the ones flanking the garage doors were purchased on Craig’s list or in local secondhand stores. And lastly, if purchased new, products were chosen for their environmental impact such as the paperstone backsplash and recycled glass counters in the kitchen and fiber cement siding for a portion of the exterior. All of these elements were brought together to create a wonderfully appropriate and colorful addition and remodel for this family home.
