One of the most charming house types, this classic 1.5 story Cape Cod had a lovely living room and dining room but the kitchen was out of date and remote from the rest of the house. The owner’s had a few ideas beyond the kitchen update; they also wanted a family room, connection to the garage and a new master bath.
Meriwether took the program and designed an attached 1.5 story addition that took the best of the original home and opened it up to the new. The remodeled kitchen sits in the same location as before but is now open to the dining, living and family room. The family room is framed by 2 walls of windows which overlook the leafy backyard. By locating the mudroom and powder room to one side of the addition and a deck to the other the backyard can now be accessed in a number of ways while the connection to the garage is now covered. Upstairs, what once was the teeniest room in the house, the new master bath has windows wrapping 3 sides.
