History played a large part in the design and construction of this home just east of the Mississippi in St. Paul. This 1950’s colonial revival home was built on ground that was originally a caretaker’s cottage of larger estate.  A desire to have the style of this home fit those of the neighborhood built a half century before was among the homeowners goals. Turning this home back in time fit the bill. Meriwether used her knowledge of architectural history as well as her creativity to make this design successful.

Meriwether did three things to recreate a Greek revival style for this home. The first is the porch, with its period columns, architrave & frieze, not only does it lend authenticity to the home it also create and inviting entry. The second was the addition itself allowed the rhythm of the windows to be repeated in the new bay, the last is the frieze detail between the top of the upper story windows and the roof.

The owners also wanted a more open main floor that would allow them to entertain large groups of family and friends. The open kitchen, dining room and family room are a more modern solution but here dropped beams and columns provide the feeling of individual spaces. Meriwether also designed the custom cabinetry and laid out the interiors so both the interior and the exterior work harmoniously.
